Film Review: Setting Them Straight

‘Setting Them Straight’ is a clever little film with a hilarious twist and solid performances from its leads. The film centers around a man, Joshua, who is visiting his parents in order to “come out” to them. The beginning of the film plays out like a typical “coming out to one’s parents” moment but suddenly takes a turn when Joshua reveals that he is in fact, straight. This comes as a shock to his parents who ironically are unable to cope with the news of his heterosexuality.
Aside from the comical plot, the acting in this super short is perhaps its greatest strength. The actors keep the film’s secret well hidden in the beginning by playing their roles brilliantly, as the oblivious parents and nervous gay son. As Joshua comes closer to revealing his secret, the actors do an excellent job of building tension in the film. After Joshua admits he is not gay, the parents take over the spotlight entirely, hilariously carrying the film to its conclusion. “Setting Them Straight” is an official selection of the New York City Independent Film Festival and will be shown during the festival's run from October 12-18, 2015.
