Interview with, Aziz Erim, co-director of To Be, Or Not…

Interview by: Megan Boyle, Short Sketch Comedy Curator

Q: How did you come up with your sketch idea?
Ha, it’s inspired by an actual story. It happened on a set to one of us during a TV show
shoot and we thought it must be something that has happened to other people and
would be a fun idea for a sketch.

Q: What dictated your choices in how you filmed your sketch?
We wanted to keep our style as cinematic as possible. Also, we are huge fans of Key & Peele sketches, so we watched a ton of those to get inspiration.

Q: What hurdles did you face while making this sketch?
We think the biggest struggle any artist is facing is financing for the projects they
want to make. We are constantly coming up with creative ways of filming something
without any money or expensive equipment. For example, this sketch was shot in
Aziz’s kitchen, that we turned into a film set and for boom, we glued a small lav mic
to a broom. We call it “broom boom”.;)

Q: There is truth in comedy, what sort of truths were you hoping to touch on with this
sketch?
Misunderstanding is the main theme in To Be, Or Not… It is so interesting to see how
often miscommunication happens on set and in life in general. Comedy helped us to
explore it with a sense of humor.

Q: Do you have any plans for sequels or additional sketches surrounding these
characters/themes?
We are definitely planning on bringing those characters back at some point, placing
them into bizarre situations and hilarious scenarios.
