Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu (United States | 2016, 7 min)

Directed by: Jesse Binger, Kaitlyn Johnston

John Potente spends his time shuffling between his dental practice, advocating for land conservation, writing about the natural world, and playing the piano that sits by his fireplace. Learning on an old Nickelodeon piano that his father bought for $5, John began playing at an early age. And for the rest of his life, at the piano has been John's comfort zone. Even though he went through college studying biology, chemistry, immunology, and dentistry, he would always find a piano on campus to play alone, late at night, after his studies were over. The piano was his close friend and confidant. Through happenstance, John met the team behind Wildlife Productions, and he was inspired to revive a favorite song of his to perform on film: Chopin's "Fantasie Impromptu". He chose to have the filming done on his antique 1929 Knabe baby grand that he has centered in the small living room of his home, a renovated summer cottage. The award-winning Wildlife Productions team set up camp at John's cottage, and during the course of one short day, wired, directed, recorded and filmed for the music video. We decided to keep the film simple and let the beautiful music and John's raw emotion and demonstrative performance speak for itself. John, for one summer day, was able to live out a dream of playing Chopin's composition, then sitting back and watching himself perform. Featured is one of Chopin's complex, yet beautiful pieces played with extreme talent, heart and vigor. A dream fulfilled for a long time Long Islander. Presenting: "Fantasie Impromptu".
